Eurycoma longifolia, also known as tongkat ali, is a small tree native to Southeast Asia. It is primarily found in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Vietnam, with some varieties also growing in parts of Cambodia, Myanmar, and Thailand.
The name "tongkat ali" translates to "Ali's walking stick," a reference to its purported aphrodisiac properties. Some attribute the "stick" in the name to the plant's long, twisted roots, which certain communities harvest for their perceived medicinal benefits.
Other aliases for E. longifolia include Long Jack, Malaysian ginseng, and Ali's Umbrella.
It's worth noting that there are three other plant species sometimes referred to as tongkat ali: Entomophthora apiculata, Polyalthia bullata, and Goniothalamus. However, this article will specifically concentrate on E. longifolia.
